The Ministry of Our Beloved Refugees in Egypt

“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it” Hebrews 13:2

POMC value the spread of the Gospel through both verbal expression and practical demonstration. We recognize the intrinsic dignity of refugees and immigrants, acknowledging them as individuals created in the image of God. We view the local Church as a pivotal instrument for facilitating transformative change, advocating for justice and mercy for those in vulnerable circumstances, and emphasising the importance of mutual empowerment and continuous learning from one another.

As per the UNHCR fact sheet in October 2023, Egypt has provided refuge for individuals compelled to leave their residences. In recent years, this encompassed a substantial entry, numbering in the tens of thousands, of refugees from Syria, Sudan, and South Sudan. Notably, since the start of the Sudanese conflict, Egypt has emerged as a primary sanctuary for approximately 300,000 Sudanese women and children in search of safety. Furthermore, according to the United Nations, Egypt accommodates around 9 million refugees and migrants originating from various nations.

Welcoming refugees is not only a kind of POMC service but also an opportunity to receive God's blessing. The POMC recognizes that the mandate to love and welcome our refugee brothers and sisters is central to Christian scripture faithfulness. As a result, our council supports fourteen South Sudanese churches in Cairo and Alexandria, as well as providing pastors with training in a variety of critical aspects and subsidizing them. Our service includes understanding refugees’ needs and creating a safe and welcoming community for them.
